Bracing for Hurricane Henri

Update 11 16-22 August

So, I am writing this on Sunday morning while the rain is just starting. Normally I would be writing this post AFTER doing my morning write session, but I’m afraid of losing power later or other problems. That all said, this week was a good writing week, and I will be launching into a full write session as soon as I finish this post.

The numbers will be a little off.

The Week in Writing and Hobbies

I started last week by writing an entire chapter in one session. And then pushing on to write a second. (I plan on finishing that second chapter after writing this post). Both of these chapters are taking my dual narratives and bringing them together into the same location. Very shortly I will have all of my “hero” povs in the same scene. It should be pretty cool and then we’ll have the turn into the last half of the book.

For the rest of the week, I was asked to write the schedule for the last half of the season for my podcast. And by schedule, I mean I picked the topics and some of the details, but the actual scheduling of recording sessions will happen later.

In gaming, I had three sessions last week. The monthly Curse of Strahd finally got back together after 8 weeks off. I’m happy to report we have all finally survived the Death House and moved into Barovia proper. My other two games have pushed forward. In the Tuesday game we managed to break the curse on one of our heroes and now we’re arguing exactly what our purpose is again. (We hunt monsters, literal monsters, but a bully warlord has taken control of the town nearby, and half of us want to rush in and depose him, and the other half of us are smart enough to realize that creates a power vacuum and something else will move in.)

The Saturday game continues to be a tomb delving adventure, but the lethalness has been turned up to 11. Been a rough go so far.

Writing by the Numbers

In my two main write sessions I managed to crank out 7522 words (and again I will hit more later today). Chapter 16 and 17 are pulling the characters to the main crossing point. To be totally honest, one group of characters are heading in that direction. While the other group is trying to head in a different direction, but everything keeps pushing them toward an ancient valley.

The next few chapters should move quickly (except for one aside where I have to do a “villain” pov).

Either way, I’m having a lot of fun with this novel. I was checking my Facebook the other day, and it had a previous memory from last year available. Last year on the 17th I posted a picture of my white board, and I just happened to be finishing up chapter 16 of my thesis novel, and I had over 66k words. I find it very amusing that a year later I’m also on chapter 16 and 17 and that I’m about 75k into the new novel. There is a certain symmetry there that I like.

It also makes me feel like I should up my writing time every session. I just feel this is going slowly. But that’s the problem I always have. That feeling of not doing enough, even though I keep progressing.

I’ll keep fighting this.

Outro

The rain has me worried. I don’t want my computer on when the storm really hits. So, another short post this week. Those of you in the path of the storm, please stay safe, and we’ll talk again on the other side.
