Classes Week 2
Short Update
So, my counts are not great for the week. In my defense I planned a trip to visit family that has been in quarantine for months. We had a cook out this weekend, and the weekend is when I get the bulk of my writing done.
Word count:
I only squeezed in two writing sessions for a total of 2676 words, which is well under my 3000 per week goal. Now, the 3000 per week was a minor goal to guarantee I make my numbers for my thesis class. But my real goal is much higher. So, I have let myself down for my personal goals.
All that said, I am on track for my class work. The wip now sits at a total of 44,131.
What’s happening in the WIP
This is a really interesting part to write through as well. Four of the five povs are all in the same area and interacting with each other. I have experimented with overlapping the time lines and showing parts of the scene from the various povs.
So, for example, I have a scene with Keegan and Slater (two POV characters) walking through a part of town and learning more about the area. At the end of the scene they run into Rune (PoV) and the scene ends with a joke to break the tension, but these two povs are face to face.
Next chapter we switch to Nemo (another POV) and we switch to minutes earlier and he’s in the same area. About a page in he comes across the scene of these other groups meeting. The reader then gets to sit as a sort of ‘fly on the wall,’ as Nemo listens in on the conversation and adds his own thoughts on what he is observing.
Until these various groups leave the same city their stories are overlapping and intertwining. I’m really enjoying telling parts of the same scene through different povs and switching things up. It will only last for a handful of chapters before they are each on their very separate path.
School News
I believe I mentioned before that I applied for week 2 of my class as the deadline for my first final. Week 2 ended at midnight on Sunday. Since I had my first final well done before class even started, I handed in my first 15000 words back on Monday
My teacher was awesome enough to get it graded and back to me by Saturday! I’m not going to shout out about how my teacher had a lot of encouraging words and excellent feedback on the story, or that I once again got a perfect grade. That would be gauche. 😊
But like many writers (and artists) I often tend to think what I’m working on isn’t very good. Or at the least I am second guessing many of my choices and I’m really upset about things. Having another, well established author and teacher, give feedback and praise is extremely affirming. It made my already good weekend that much better, and it helped me stop being mad that I wasn’t getting any writing done this weekend.
Week 3 of classes
I have to get back on track with my word goal. Weekly goal is still only 3000 words, but really, I should do a lot more. This next section of the book is very action packed so I think once I get a good moment to write I should just open up the tap and the words should pour out. When I get to a part of the story with a lot of action or that I’ve been planning for a while (both apply here) I have a tendency to write faster and faster.
This week is also fairly light in the assignments for my classes, so I should be able to devote more to writing time. That all said, I do have other side work that has to be done. My writing time is getting impinged upon by art time that HAS to be finished.
Sorry for the short post. I will also have to work on getting these updates a little meatier.
